New to hijab and worried yours is see-through, or found a favourite chiffon too sheer to pray in? It is a common worry with an easy fix. Here is how to check and what to wear for full coverage.
The quick version: Check it in daylight over an opaque cap. For full coverage choose a denser fabric like jersey or woven viscose, add an opaque undercap, or double a light fabric. For prayer, opacity matters most.
Hold the hijab up to daylight or a window. If you can clearly see through it, it will be sheer on your head too. Chiffon and light modal are the usual culprits. A quick real-world test is to wear it over a plain opaque undercap and check in a bright mirror.
Jersey is the most reliably opaque everyday fabric, which is another reason it suits beginners. Woven viscose and heavier modal also cover well. The sheer ones, chiffon and thin modal, are lovely but need help to be fully opaque.

An opaque undercap covers your hair fully, so even a lighter hijab on top gives complete coverage. This is the simplest fix and lets you keep wearing the sheer colours you love without worry.
For salah, coverage needs to be complete, so a see-through hijab on its own is not enough. Either pray in a denser fabric, add an opaque undercap, or keep a dedicated opaque prayer set. Many people keep one simple opaque piece just for prayer.
