If you melt the moment you step outside, dread the heat during work or a workout, and worry about that stuffy smell by the end of the day, the fabric on your head is a big part of it. Here is what actually keeps you cool.
The quick version: Reach for light, breathable modal or an airy chiffon, choose a mesh or breathable undercap or skip it when you can, and avoid polyester, which traps heat and sweat.
Modal is the summer favourite for a reason: light, breathable and soft, with enough drape that it does not cling. Chiffon is airy and barely-there for events, though it needs an underscarf and a few pins. Avoid thick, stretchy jersey and anything polyester on the hottest days, since they hold heat against your head. A looser, draped style also lets air move, which beats a tight wrap in a heatwave.
Modal for everyday, chiffon for events, natural breathable weaves.
Polyester and heavy stretchy jersey, which trap heat and sweat.
Undercaps add a layer, and a warm one adds heat. A mesh or thin breathable cap keeps the grip without cooking your scalp. Some people cut a cap down to a headband so the crown stays open, and others skip the cap entirely with a non-see-through fabric. On very hot days, less layering is your friend.
That end-of-day smell is sweat and trapped heat in the fabric. Breathable materials help a lot, but so do simple habits: rotate a fresh hijab rather than re-wearing, wash more often in hot weather, let it fully air dry, and keep a breathable cap so your scalp is not sitting in moisture all day.

Modal for everyday and chiffon for events. Both breathe well. Skip polyester and heavy jersey on hot days.
A mesh or thin breathable one, or none at all with an opaque fabric. A warm cap is often what tips you into overheating.
Breathable fabric, a fresh hijab each day, more frequent washing, full air drying, and a breathable cap so sweat does not sit in the fabric.
