Where do I even start? I have no family or friends who wear hijab

anonymous·Aug 27, 2026·34 replies

It feels so overwhelming. I have no family or friends who wear hijab, so I have no one to ask. Which fabric, which cap, how do I even wrap it without it falling apart by lunch? Where does a total beginner actually start?

First, breathe, you are not behind and there is no such thing as a perfect start. Do yourself a favour and begin with an instant hijab (the ones with the cap already sewn in). You literally pull it on, no wrapping, no pins. It builds your confidence for the first few weeks while you learn everything else. This complete beginner's guide walks through it step by step.

Jersey was my starting fabric. It does not slide around like the silky ones, it needs zero pins, and it forgives a lot while you are learning. Once you feel steady you can branch out into chiffon and the fancier stuff.

Two undercaps and two jerseys is genuinely all you need to start. Do not spend a fortune yet. Add pieces once you know what you actually reach for.

We have all been the girl with no one to ask, that is exactly why this place exists. Ask us anything, no question is too basic here.

If you want a shortlist so you are not paralysed by choice, the best beginner-friendly hijabs roundup is where I started.
